Skype for Mobile Pocket PC

Cool Links August 30th, 2005

Great. I’m now shopping for a WiFi enabled Pocket PC to replace my old Samsung SPH I-330 Palm phone/pda (Bye-bye Sprint. Sorry you don’t have service where I need it). I LOVED the I-330. I could surf the web (where Sprint had service), read Avantgo news and the phone was great, but now I want WiFi and Skype features.

Read Skype’s announcement about their new Pocket PC software here.

Anyone want a good deal on a Samsung I-330 pda phone? ;-)

Seriously, I’ve got one for sale for $75 including shipping. Check it out here.

Cell/Landline hybrid

This thing is ever so cool. Plug it into your wall jack and charge your mobile phone in it. The cordless handset that comes with it will let you make calls through you landline OR through your cell number (use those mobile long distance minutes) and you can add up to two additional cordless handsets to distribute around your house or office.

Word is they’ll add WiFi cabability as some point so Skype calls can be made, too. As tempting as this thing is now, I think I’ll wait for WiFi. But it’s definitely caught my interest.

Check out the RCA Cell Docking Station.

Skype

Anyone who know me knows that I love Skype! For anyone with broadband and a PC who has long distance friends with a PC, it’s absolutely free long distance. I use it in my work almost daily. I live in California and my employer, Frames Direct, is in Houston. I work from my laptop with a simple microphone (sometimes I go hi-tech with a bluetooth headset) and we have conference calls. Once, my boss was in South Africa, the development team was in Houston, I was in California and another member of the team was in Ohio. It sounded like we were all in the same building talking over a good intercom system. And, it was free!

Skype also offers extremely low cost calling to traditional phones, about half the best traditional long distance plan offers. You can even get your own “SkypeIn” telephone number for about $38 per year, complete with voice mail. This lets those poor souls without Skype call you using a standard phone. I, for instance, got a Houston number. That lets anyone in Houston dial me as though I were a local Houston call. It rings through Skype on my laptop sitting in California and we talk just like any other phone call.

If you don’t have Skype, download it for free and install it. The other services are extra cost, but PC to PC calling is absolutely free. I highly recommend it.

Frames Direct rolls out new site search

News, SEO August 24th, 2005

My employer, Frames Direct (http://www.framesdirect.com) has unveiled a new site search function that is totally better than before. The site, which sells discount eyeglasses, sunglasses, frames, contact lenses and goggles, now can be searched completely – dynamic pages, static pages, everything. This, of course, means, we’re scrambling to make sure all pages have relevant content, not only for the site customers, but for the spiders as well. What’s good for the user is usually good for the spiders, I say. ;-)
