Western Digital My Passport Essential External Hard Drive
The drive is about the size of a smart phone, slightly wider than my iPhone, so it is easily carried in a pocket or bag. And, it’s USB powered, meaning no brick power supply to mess with.
Installation in a breeze. Just plug it into a USB port and follow the prompts. The backup software will backup as you work. Handy, but can cause problems. On my Toshiba laptop, which is running Windows XP, the constant backup drags the PC down to the point of keeping me from getting work done. I have to unplug the hard drive during work hours.
Might not be an issue on newer, faster PCs, but it would be nice if the built in software offered scheduling. As is, all I see is an option for backup during idle times, which didn’t seem to work for me.
If you want automatic, no hassle, portable backup, the Western Digital My Passport Essential does a nice job, but be aware that there are some limitations. I recommend it, but I also suggest a newer, faster PC.
As a hands-free portable backup device, I’d give this baby four out of five stars. (And, yes, you can use it as a simple external hard drive if you like.)
